Welcome Everyone!

Hello everyone! We hope you’re having a lovely summer! First and foremost, a “congratulations” is in order for returning students. Well done for progressing on to the next year of your studies! You’ve all done so well and you should be really proud of yourselves! Enjoy the rest of your summer break – we look forward to seeing you in September!

Now, to all potential future students – we’re wishing you all the best for your results day! We’re sure you’ll do brilliantly. In the meantime, we thought we’d clue you in for what to expect during your time as an LLS student in York!

  1. Our Excellent Staff

We’re so fortunate to have such amazing staff in the Language and Linguistics Department at York. All of our lecturers, seminar leaders and module convenors are so passionate about their field of subject, and are more than happy to help and answer any questions you may have. Pop in to the Languages and Linguistics Department (located in Vanbrugh college) and say hello to them!

  1. The Module Choices

Over the course of your undergrad program you’ll be able to select a wide range of modules. In your first and second years you’ll have some core modules that you must take (you’ll get through them, don’t worry) but you’ll still be able to choose your own modules to fill in your remaining credits (note: the amount of core modules will change from year to year). Our course offers a wide range of modules, so there’s something for everyone! Whether you’re into syntax, phonetics, semantics, teaching or the history of English, you’re bound to find something you’ll enjoy!

  1. York is a great place to be for languages and linguistics

York has a rich and diverse linguistic history. You’ll learn more about this if you take any History of English modules so we won’t spoil it here. What we will say though is that York has played an important role in the linguistic development of English, so where better to study the history of English?

  1. Great Academic Support

The University of York came first place in the National Student Survey (NSS) for academic support earlier this year out of all the Russell Group universities! There’s no shame in needing a helping hand at uni. Speaking as someone about to go into their third and final year, uni is hard (but very, very rewarding!) It’s so much better to speak up and ask for help if you need it, and our fantastic staff are here to help you whenever you need it.

  1. Bonus: LongBoi!

At this point you’ll have definitely heard of LongBoi, and if you haven’t, where have you been?! LongBoi is our resident mallard/Indian runner cross, and is a bit of a celebrity here! You can buy some bird seed (prepared by the University’s very own grounds keepers) from Nisa for £1 if you’d like to feed LongBoi and his friends!

We’re wishing you the very best of luck with your results! Having to deal with A-Levels and COVID was awful, so you should just be proud of yourselves for making it this far! We’re looking forward to welcoming you in September! In the meantime, have a wonderful summer and a well earned break!
